Pancreatic Neuropathy & Pain

Where does pancreatic pain come from?

NEURAL REMODELLING

The question

Pain in pancreatic disease is often refractory to treatment. We ask which changes in nerves and their environment trigger and sustain it.

Our approach

We study neural remodelling and neurogenic inflammation in human tissue and in disease models, and test analgesic approaches preclinically.

What we have learned

Nerves in the diseased pancreas change structurally: they become denser and hypertrophic, and their remodelling relates to pain severity. We have also identified neuro-immune mediators of pain.

Where we are going

The aim is to develop targeted pain therapies from these mediators that go beyond symptom control.
