Programme 02 · Research
Neural Invasion & the Neural Niche
How do tumour cells travel along nerves?
The question
Neural invasion contributes to early recurrence after surgery. We ask which cells and signals open the path into the nerve — and whether that path can be closed.
Our approach
We develop 3D culture models of nerve–tumour interaction, characterise genetically engineered mouse models, and examine Schwann cells, stromal cells and immune cells as possible triggers.
What we have learned
In human tissue and in models, Schwann cells contact tumour cells before invasion itself begins — nerves are therefore not a passive conduit but an active part of the process.
Where we are going
We are characterising the perineural niche at cellular and molecular level to find targets against spread along nerves.
